1. Transportation & Installation
As precise electronic parts, relays are sensitive to transportation and storage conditions, with protective treatments finished during production. Their original electrical performance must not be damaged during incoming inspection and on-site assembly. Avoid direct contact with lead terminals to prevent surface contamination which may weaken solderability. The position of lead terminals shall match the holes on PCB. Misalignment will create harmful stress and damage internal components, so drilling shall follow the attached hole layout drawing. It is recommended to limit storage time within three months. Relays should be stored and assembled in a clean and dry environment.
2. Flux Protection
Non-sealed relays are vulnerable to flux contamination. Flux-resistant or fully sealed relays are recommended to block flux vapor seeping through gaps between leads, base and shell. They fit processes with plenty of dipping flux or spray flux. Preheating and drying can further strengthen protection against flux invasion for flux-resistant relays.
3. Welding Process
Careful operation is required when using coating flux or automatic welding to prevent damage to relay performance. Both flux-resistant and fully sealed relays are compatible with dip soldering and wave soldering. The maximum welding temperature and duration should be adjusted according to specific relay models.
4. Cleaning Standards
Immersive cleaning is forbidden for non-sealed relays. Suitable cleaners like alcohol or freon can be used for sealed relays. Ultrasonic cleaning shall be avoided, as harmonics from ultrasonic waves will cause cold welding abrasion on contacts and even contact jamming. After cleaning and drying, ventilate the relays fully until they cool down to room temperature.
5. Installation Layout
Proper installation layout is critical to maintain stable performance of relays
Vibration & Shock Resistance: Arrange contacts and movable armature parts perpendicular to the direction of vibration or impact. For normally open contacts without coil excitation, shock and vibration resistance largely depends on installation angle.
Contact Reliability: Install relays with contact surfaces vertically to stop dust and dirt from accumulating on contacts. Do not switch heavy loads and low-level signals on one single relay simultaneously, otherwise mutual interference will occur.
Side-by-Side Mounting: When multiple relays are installed closely together, accumulated heat will lead to abnormal high temperature. A gap of more than 5mm shall be reserved between each relay for heat dissipation. Ambient temperature must always meet the specifications stated in product datasheets.
Socket Application: Ensure sockets are firmly mounted with reliable contact between relay pins and sockets. Match mounting holes well and fix the whole set with matched brackets.
Lead Wire Selection: If relay connection via leads is needed, choose wires with proper cross-sectional area according to load capacity.
