Heavy-Duty Linear Actuators: Sizing Ball Screw Drives for Press-Fitting and Riveting Applications

A ball screw heavy-duty linear actuator for press-fit and riveting must sustain repeated axial impact loads while maintaining ±0.005 mm repeatability across millions of cycles. Sizing ignores static thrust alone; the calculation must include dynamic shock load, screw buckling, thermal expansion and L10 bearing life. This article outlines the engineering workflow for selecting ball screw drives for servo riveting and component press-fit stations.

Dynamic Load Ratings under Axial Impact Shocks

Static thrust rating is not the governing parameter for riveting and press-fit. Peak impact force during material yielding can exceed steady-state working force by 2.0–3.2 times. Equivalent dynamic load formula:

\(F_{eq}=\sqrt[3]{\frac{\sum(F_i^3\times n_i)}{N_{total}}}\) Where \(F_i\) = instantaneous axial force, \(n_i\) = cycle count at that force, \(N_{total}\) = total operating cycles. The calculated \(F_{eq}\) must be ≤ 0.3 × ball screw basic dynamic load rating \(C_a\) for L10 life ≥ 20 million cycles.
