Heavy-Duty Linear Actuators: Sizing Ball Screw Drives for Press-Fitting and Riveting Applications

This document defines the mechanical sizing procedure for ball-screw driven electric linear actuators used in relay press-fit and servo riveting stations. Under intermittent axial shock loads ranging from 2 kN to 5 kN, the core design task is calculating L10 fatigue life, critical rotational speed, and thermal stress from screw expansion. Servo electric actuators replace hydraulic cylinders to eliminate oil leakage and reduce power consumption by 35% to 55% on continuous press cycles.

Critical Rotational Speed and Screw Buckling Limits Under Compressive Stress

  1. Long ball screws suffer whip vibration at high rpm. The critical speed is determined by screw diameter, unsupported length and bearing support type. For long-stroke press actuators, the allowable maximum rotational speed must stay below 75% of the calculated critical speed to avoid resonance.
  2. Download Detailed 3D CAD (.STEP) Models for Linear Actuators from Heavy-load Linear Drive & Long-travel Guide Rail System to verify screw buckling on your press-fit fixture.

Thermal Expansion Risk Analysis

A 1000 mm screw with a 8°C temperature rise generates 0.096 mm linear expansion. Fixed-fixed layout locks both ends, turning thermal elongation into axial compressive force up to 3900 N, which increases bearing preload and shortens screw life.

Fixed-Supported vs Fixed-Fixed Bearing Support Configurations: Thermal Expansion Mitigation
