Dimensional Criticality: Why magnetic latching relies on precise magnetic air gaps (0.8 ± 0.02 mm)

  • Magnetic holding force and release threshold of latching relays follow the inverse-square law with magnetic air gap. A 0.02 mm drift of air gap shifts holding force by 8~12%. Armature stroke defines contact closing travel, bounce duration and contact pressure. Variation beyond tolerance causes intermittent switching failure, contact welding or shortened electrical endurance. Inline inspection must capture both static air gap and dynamic armature stroke at full operating voltage. The measurement system repeatability shall be better than 1/10 of tolerance band, i.e. ±0.002 mm for this feature.

Contact Gap and Armature Stroke Measurement: Laser Triangulation vs. Optical Micrometers

Magnetic latching relay functional reliability depends directly on magnetic air gap dimension; the critical nominal value is 0.8 mm with ±0.02 mm tolerance. Non-contact optical gauging eliminates probe-induced deformation of thin armature and silver-tin-oxide contact surfaces. Laser triangulation and thru-beam optical micrometers represent two mainstream inline metrology architectures to capture armature stroke and contact gap during relay mass production.
